Back in the days, declaring yourself gay publicly was no easy task. Many famous gay authors were secretly attracted to the same sex. These are people who left us some of the most important works in the history of the world. In this blog, we pay tribute to all of the authors who were brave enough to be different. Take a look.
Clive Barker – Master of Horror
We’ll start things off with one of our favorites, the utterly grim Clive Barker. The youngest on the list, Barker came to public’s attention in the mid 1980s when he published his collection of stories titled Books of Blood. Barker quickly became one of the most famous gay authors in the world when he adapted one of his stories into the popular Hellraiser film in 1987.
Barker has been openly gay since the 1990s and has often incorporated that into his work. He publicly stated that his partner’s support was crucial for the publication of his famous collection of stories.
Herman Melville’s Close Friendship
One of Barker’s favorite writers and immense influences in his work was undoubtedly Herman Melville. Most famous for his Moby-Dick novel, this prolific writer was the embodiment of the American Renaissance. Interestingly, Melville’s sexuality still remains a mystery to this day.
Many researchers consider him one of the famous gay authors mainly because of his friendship with the author John Hawthorne. Their correspondence became so intimate over the years that Melville even moved to Berkshire to be closer to him.
Famous Gay Writers: Tennessee Williams
Tennessee Williams is a household name when it comes to masterful writing of plays and dialogue. He rose to fame with “The Glass Menagerie” that made him a celebrity at 33. Among his most important works are also “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” which were made into successful films.
Although Tennessee had a couple of relationships with women in the early days, he realized he was a homosexual in his late 20s. He committed to gay life afterwards. Williams is nowadays regarded as an exceptional psychologist, and one of the most famous gay authors in the world. Undoubtedly, he was a motivation for many other aspiring gay writers.
Truman Capote – A Unique Personality
One of the most colorful characters in the literary scene of the 1950s and 1960s that inspired numerous other writers – Truman Capote. Beautifully portrayed by the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman in a 2005 film, Capote was quite an exceptional writer whose most famous works are “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” and “In Cold Blood” that showcased his depth and diversity. These works alone placed him high on any list of famous gay writers.
We could say that Capote was truly a showman who presented the gay community in the best light. As an open homosexual, he appeared in numerous talk shows and shared his positive vibrations everywhere, despite his problems and addictions.
Oscar Wilde – Intelligent and Witty
Finally, we can’t talk about eccentric, gay personalities without mentioning one of the most famous gay writers in the world – Oscar Wilde. We could say that this Irish poet and playwright was the first celebrity ever. His writing was as distinctive as his personality. Chances are you’ve probably heard at least one of Wilde’s witty quotes or remarks.
His works often included allusions to homosexuality and included rather sexually ambiguous characters. In a way, his plays and poems helped promote gay community better than any other protest in the world.
